For those interested in therapeutic Yoga, the following workshops qualify as modules towards the:

YOGA BODYWORK CERTIFICATE

This course combines researched and proven Indian, Japanese & Chinese Yoga Bodywork methods for self-application and to help others.

You can take individual modules as workshops in their own right for personal interest, or do them all, in any order, within your own time frame, if you wish to gain the certificate. No prior experience is required or assumed.

What is Yoga Bodywork?
Yoga Bodywork is a synthesis of techniques and methods that achieve the following:

• Efficiently and deeply corrects imbalances in body alignment and muscle tone.

• Rapidly and safely increases flexibility and strength, thereby making it easier to overcome physical barriers within yoga postures.

• Provides techniques for deeper states of relaxation and body control.

• Helps alleviate many common ailments.

• Markedly improves overall health.

What methods does it employ?
Yoga Bodywork offers a combination of dynamic physical bodywork and internal energy bodywork, by adapting and utilising:

• The most up-to-date techniques used by physio’s & exercise physiologists to
increase the range of movement throughout the musculo-skeletal system.

• Ayurvedic & Yoga massage based rejuvenation systems to eliminate toxins from the body, and revitalize the skin, muscles and nerves.

• Chinese & Japanese bodywork techniques to realign the posture and benefit the
internal organs.

• Indian & Japanese yoga therapy methods effective for alleviating common ailments and maximizing health.

• Chinese Qigong exercises to increase vitality & reinforce resistance to disease.

Who should learn it?
Yoga Bodywork is an ideal system for those who practise yoga. It will add a new dimension to, and considerably improve, your yoga practise. It will also enable you to apply the methods to others, either as a professional bodywork therapist, or on colleagues and friends. However, if you do not practise yoga, you can still practice this system effectively.

Those of you who are already established in other areas of health care will find these courses highly complementary to your existing skills, mainly because we strongly emphasise the principles of: efficient use of the body, the use of support & connection rather than force, continuity and fluency of technique, and empathy.

Where does it come from?
Yoga Bodywork has been integrated into a single system by Chris Jarmey, who has drawn upon over 35 years experience as a Yoga teacher, physiotherapist, and practitioner / teacher of oriental medicine. Chris has synthesized the most effective elements of Yoga / Ayurvedic bodywork, Shiatsu & acupressure, modern PNF muscle balancing techniques, therapeutic Qigong (Chi Kung), and the corrective exercise element of Japanese Okido Yoga. Yoga bodywork is therefore a synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern research.

Where can I learn this method?
Courses are held in Spain, Portugal & Greece. From this year courses will also be held in Marlborough Wiltshire, and Central London.

If you run a Yoga Centre, hold yoga classes or run a college of massage or complementary medicine, we can organise Yoga Bodywork modules or the complete course within your organisation.

How are the courses structured?
Courses range from short workshops to a full practitioner training, with modules available to be taken in any order, either individually or as a full course; thus enabling you to design your own programme to fit into your own time frame.

Beyond the Yoga Bodywork course, graduates have the option of continuing onto the Yoga Therapy Diploma course.

SYLLABUS

CORE MODULES

Module RV (one day)
Realigning Vertebra
This workshop presents a specific exercise for each vertebra, to realign its position and strengthen its surrounding musculature. Many of the exercises, though not all, are adaptations of basic yoga asana’s. Each vertebra and its adjacent spinal nerve root has a direct relationship to a specific internal organ and body/mind function. Therefore, these exercises have a physiological effect beyond simply correcting distortions of the spinal column. They can be applied to oneself or prescribed to a client.

Module AE (one day)
Anatomy of Energy: Chakras, Nadi’s, Channels & Points
This module presents an overview of the Indian system of Nadis and Chakras, and highlights its relationship to the Chinese system of Channels and Points (Gates), as well as showing how the Tibetan view of energy circulation interweaves into these systems. The day will include various visualization / meditation exercises.

Module ADT (one day)
Ayurvedic Deep Tissue Massage
This workshop presents a deep muscle massage technique using a cream. It is EXTRAORDINARILY effective in releasing muscle tension and improving flexibility and posture. This particular system is based on a ‘Yoga Chikitsa’ body rejuvenation technique; an ancient Ayurvedic massage method that developed in India around 600 BC (Ayurveda means ‘knowledge of life’ in Sanskrit).

Module RB (one day)
Reading the body
How to read signs on the face, tongue, back, belly and general posture, that indicate constitutional weaknesses and strengths, plus potential and actual physical disorders, as well as revealing the emotional and psychological characteristics of the recipient.

Module RCA (one day)
Relieving Common Ailments
Based on Zen Yoga Therapy, this system combines acupressure with adapted yoga asana’s and related exercises to help alleviate common ailments such as breathing disorders, insomnia, bowel disorders, menstrual disorders, minor prolapses, and many other problems. They can be applied to oneself or to a client.

Module MF (one day)
Muscle Flushing
These techniques involve a combination of muscle contractions within a modified twisting stretch, plus specific techniques applied directly to joints, and innovative ways to access and treat pressure points. They are very effective in clearing waste products from body tissues, strengthening and realigning muscles and sinews, and correcting distortions in joints.

Module SPR (two days)
Sotai Postural Rebalancing
Sotai is a highly effective system of simple exercises and techniques that equalise muscle tone and correct distortions in the posture. It can very effectively eliminate pain in the back, neck or shoulders, and release muscular stiffness or pain anywhere in the body. It is presented as a sequence of techniques that begin with the feet and finish at the neck. It can also be used to release blockages in the energy pathways (nadis / meridians) throughout the body.

Sotai uses the principle of following the line of least resistance. For example, if your neck will not turn easily to the left, then specific exercises based around moving the neck to the right, away from the pain and stiffness, will re-establish full mobility.

Other related exercises for lengthening and strengthening specific muscle groups, based on the latest research into muscle physiology, will be presented here.

Module GIS (three days)
Generating inner Strength
Including Indian yoga mind-centring exercises & Chinese Qigong forms, plus the science and application of healing sounds and mantra.

PERIPHERAL MODULES

General Foundation Course (four or six days, depending on format)
Shiatsu Bodywork – General Foundation Course
This course involves stretching, leverage and leaning your weight into various parts of the recipient's body to encourage greater harmony of energy, circulation, flexibility and postural integrity. The system involves selected Shiatsu techniques given in various positions. This course must be completed to gain the Yoga bodywork certificate. It can be taken before, between or after the core modules. This course is offered at all European Shiatsu School branches in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Greece. For dates and locations of these courses, go to Foundation Course on the left hand menu, under courses.

Module A & P (three days)
(Those with a therapy qualification that includes A & P may be exempt from this module).
Anatomy & Physiology
The anatomy syllabus covers the musculo-skeletal system in detail and is taught over
three days. Physiology is given as a self-study pack.

Module EX (one day)
Final exams
This module only applies to those wishing to gain a practitioners certificate. Those
doing modules for personal development only need not take these exams

Bolt on modules in subjects such as nutrition, ear acupuncture, ear acupressure and
face-lift bodywork are also available upon request.

Graduates of the full certificated course can be entered onto the Register of Yoga Bodywork and receive full insurance cover.

A JAPANESE YOGA SPINAL REALIGNMENT WORKSHOP

At The Old Barn Yoga Centre
Ironmonger Lane, High St, Marlborough

What is Japanese Yoga?

Japanese Yoga, also known as Okido Yoga or Zen Yoga, was developed by Masahiro Oki, who founded the Japan Yoga Association in 1958. Oki developed a series of unique Yoga based exercises for the treatment of many ailments and postural distortions. His acclaimed system of exercises and postures designed for straightening the spine and relieving common ailments has been further developed by Chris Jarmey, who worked with Master Oki.

Chris has been teaching yoga since the age of 18 and lived for many years in various yoga ashrams. He is a qualified physiotherapist and Principal of the European Shiatsu School. He also holds post-graduate qualifications in exercise physiology and Oriental medicine, and is author of many books on anatomy, oriental medicine, qigong, shiatsu and meditation.

Japanese Yoga for Realigning each Spinal Vertebra
